Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho has spoken about the damage caused to his relationship with Roma’s leadership after the club’s defeat by Sevilla in the 2023 Europa League final.
Mourinho believed Roma should have been awarded a penalty following a handball by a Sevilla player during the match. He confronted referee Anthony Taylor after the final, with the Portuguese manager later becoming involved in a heated exchange with the official.
Taylor was subsequently attacked and intimidated by Roma supporters at Budapest Airport.
Mourinho said he accepted responsibility for what happened in the tunnel involving the referee, but rejected any responsibility for the incidents at the airport. He added that the dispute had affected his relationship with the club’s directors.
Several months after leaving Roma, Mourinho was appointed manager of Fenerbahce.
