Toni Kroos has taken a step towards becoming a coach after telling the Spanish Football Federation he is interested in joining a coaching course designed for former professional players.
The former Real Madrid midfielder is expected to enrol on the programme during the 2027-28 season, according to AS. Kroos already holds a recognised coaching qualification that allows him to work up to the third level of football.
Completing the new course would give him an A licence, which would allow its holder to coach teams at any level. Under the qualification he currently possesses, Kroos can sit on the bench as an assistant coach but cannot take charge as the first-team manager of a club in either the first or second division.
The move represents a possible new direction for Kroos, who has been away from the competitive side of football for two years. Having established himself as one of the world’s leading players, he is now beginning to consider a place in the dugout as a potential future within the sport.
Kroos continues to work at the academy he founded in Boadilla, where he enjoys helping younger players develop and receive their football education. His involvement there has kept him connected to coaching and to the development of emerging generations.
Real Madrid also considered bringing Kroos back into the club’s structure last year. His visits to the academy that bears his name have further reduced the distance between him and the Spanish club, while ensuring that his connection with Real Madrid remains visible.
Kroos spent the later part of his playing career at Real Madrid and became one of the defining midfielders of his generation. The proposed coaching course would provide the next formal step towards a role on the touchline, although no decision has been announced about where he might work after completing it.
