Liverpool have reportedly submitted a £37 million offer for Mexico international Gilberto Mora, according to the Liverpool Echo, although the proposed transfer remains unconfirmed.
The 17-year-old attacking midfielder has attracted sustained interest from leading European clubs since his breakthrough performance at the World Cup this summer. Mora became the second-youngest player to start a World Cup match, with only Pele having done so at a younger age.
Mora turns 18 later this month, when a record move to a leading European club could reportedly be announced. TUDN reporter David Faitelson said earlier this week that Liverpool had followed an initial enquiry by making a formal offer for the player.
ESPN Mexico reporter Leon Lecanda has also reported that a record transfer involving Mora could be confirmed after his 18th birthday.
Liverpool’s interest was first reported in more detail last month, when Globo Esporte, as cited by Sport Witness, said the club had contacted Tijuana to ask about Mora’s contract situation and whether a transfer might be possible.
Mora made his Tijuana debut in August 2024 at the age of 15, coming off the bench to provide an assist in a 3-1 win over Santos Laguna. He has since played 62 times for the club, scoring 15 goals and registering three assists.
His progress led to a first call-up to the Mexico squad in the summer of 2025. Mora was part of the Gold Cup-winning team last year, making him the youngest player to win an international trophy. He scored his first goal for Mexico during last month’s international break.
Reports from Mexico have also associated Mora with Arsenal and Manchester United, as well as Liverpool. However, the player’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, has not confirmed any plans for his future.
Speaking to Mexican newspaper Record, Pimenta said: “Please understand that I will not comment on transfer rumours. I will not say anything about any player’s transfer. Thank you very much for your understanding.”
Mexico manager Rafael Marquez believes Mora has the qualities to establish himself in Europe.
“I think Gilberto is very talented, and as long as he is managed well, he will have a fantastic future,” Marquez told ABC Noticias. “I think he can adapt to any team.
“He has the ability, and most importantly, he has the mentality to succeed. Wherever he goes, I am confident he will have many opportunities and a great career.”
Mexico team-mate Raul Jimenez said Mora could succeed in any major league but suggested that a move to a less competitive competition could provide a gradual route into European football.
“He has the ability to play anywhere. But he can also take it step by step and grow gradually, as many players do,” Jimenez told Claro Sports.
“Some might go to a slightly less competitive league first before making the jump, like Argentine and Brazilian players who go to Dutch or Portuguese teams first.
“However, given his ability and potential, I think he would succeed even if he started in a top league.
“Where do I want him to go? Germany might be goodBorussia Dortmund could be an excellent fit, very well-suited to his style.
“Or Spain, where the league is more technical and sometimes less physical. I think he could adapt well there too.”
Mora’s next club remains unknown, and it is yet to be established whether Liverpool’s reported interest will lead to a completed transfer.
