Scott McTominay’s future at Napoli is becoming increasingly uncertain, with the Scotland midfielder’s representatives pushing for renewed negotiations over a contract extension.
Il Mattino, via TuttoNapoli, reports that McTominay’s camp has asked Napoli to reopen discussions, but a resolution must be reached quickly if the club are to prevent him from considering offers in January. Real Madrid are among the clubs understood to have contacted his agents.
The two parties remain a significant distance apart financially. McTominay currently earns about €3m a season, while his representatives are seeking more than €8m to extend his contract from June 2028 until 2030. Napoli’s summer proposal was reportedly closer to €5m.
Club president Aurelio De Laurentiis does not regard the renewal as an immediate priority, given that McTominay still has almost two years remaining on his existing agreement. However, the player’s representatives want the matter settled as soon as possible.
Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio remains confident that a compromise can be reached.
“McTominay’s renewal is an important piece,” he said. “The club is already working to try to find an agreement, and I believe that in the end it can be found.”
The situation has echoes of Napoli’s handling of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgia international was named Serie A’s best player during Napoli’s 2022-23 Scudetto-winning campaign, but remained on the €1.5m salary he had agreed when he joined the club.
Napoli offered him a substantial increase, reportedly worth about €5m plus bonuses, while his market valuation was being discussed at more than €100m. Kvaratskhelia rejected the proposal.
In January 2025, with Napoli top of the Serie A table and Kvaratskhelia’s contract running until 2027, he requested a move. He subsequently joined Paris Saint-Germain for €70m plus bonuses – considerably below the valuation previously attached to him – and his reported salary increased to €9m.
Napoli went on to win the title without Kvaratskhelia.
There are clear similarities with McTominay, who was named the league’s best player as Napoli won the 2024-25 Scudetto. His performances have taken him beyond the level of his current contract, while his representatives are seeking a salary well above Napoli’s self-imposed limit.
The timing is different. Kvaratskhelia still had two and a half years left on his deal when he departed, whereas McTominay, who turns 30 in December, has just under two years remaining. His resale value is likely to decline from this point, making January a potentially important moment for Napoli.
Before any decision over his future, McTominay must return to action. He was cleared this week following his heart procedure, and manager Massimiliano Allegri hopes he will be available for Saturday’s home match against Frosinone.
