David Silva believes Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Fabian Ruiz should win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, while insisting Barcelona will be impossible to catch in La Liga if they maintain their current level.
The former Spain international selected Ruiz ahead of more widely expected contenders, including Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe, saying the award should go to a Spanish player.
Silva, 40, made the comments during an appearance on the El Partidazo programme on COPE radio. He praised Ruiz for his contribution to Paris Saint-Germain and the national team, as well as the number of trophies he has won over the past two years.
“For me, teamwork is the most important thing, because without it you cannot win,” Silva said. “But if I had to give it to someone, it would be Fabian, because he has won the most titles in the past two years.
“He has been an important player for Paris Saint-Germain and then for the national team. He does not receive enough recognition, and I do not know why, because he is a great player. I admire him a lot and he has done an amazing job quietly.”
Silva added: “Rodri has already won it; otherwise, I would have mentioned him too.”
The former midfielder also offered his assessment of the La Liga title race between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Real Madrid are six points behind Barcelona, but Silva said the leaders would retain a decisive advantage if they continue performing at their current standard.
“If Barcelona continue like this, it will be impossible,” he said.
“They are playing at a very high level and have produced outstanding performances for many years with this coach, Flick. They have strengthened their squad extremely well. If they maintain this level, they will have no rivals.”
Silva nevertheless warned that Real Madrid could not be dismissed because of the quality within their squad.
“Real Madrid are Real Madrid,” he said. “They can never be ruled out because they have great players. If they keep their level close to Barcelona’s until the end of the league, they can compete.
“But I repeat, if Barcelona continue at this level, I do not think so.”
Silva retired in the summer of 2023 after a successful career with Valencia, Manchester City and Real Sociedad. He also represented Spain between 2006 and 2018 and established himself as one of the most accomplished players to come from the Canary Islands.
Three years after ending his playing career, Silva has announced that he will make a one-match appearance for Supreme Chatin in Hong Kong.
