Ghana name 23-man squad for Mexico friendly

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has named his maiden squad for this month’s international friendly against Mexico, as preparations continue for the 2026 World Cup.

The 23-man squad blends experienced internationals, emerging European-based players and a number of under-23 prospects who are also being assessed ahead of upcoming Olympic Games qualifiers. The selection reflects a broader strategy to evaluate depth while building a competitive team for future tournaments.

Among the notable inclusions is Majeed Ashimeru, who returns to the national team after a prolonged absence due to a muscle injury that had limited his involvement at both club and international level. His recall is expected to strengthen Ghana’s midfield options.

Forward Felix Afena-Gyan is also back in the squad, marking his first call-up since featuring against Trinidad and Tobago in May last year. His return adds attacking depth as Ghana look to test combinations ahead of future competitions.

The squad also includes several Europe-based players such as Abdul Aziz Issah of Barcelona B, Ebenezer Annan of AS Saint-Étienne, Ibrahim Osman of Birmingham City, and Paul Reverson of Ajax.

At the domestic level, Salim Adams, a key figure for Medeama SC, leads the group of home-based players. He is joined by Ebenezer Abban of Heart of Lions, Ebenezer Adade of Dreams FC, and Razak Simpson, captain of Nations FC.

The inclusion of both established and emerging players highlights Queiroz’s intention to assess a wide pool of talent as he shapes the squad. The friendly against Mexico is expected to provide a valuable test, offering insight into player form, tactical options and overall team cohesion.

Ghana are scheduled to travel to Mexico on 22 May 2026 for the fixture, which forms part of their preparations for upcoming international competitions.
