Maza’s moment: rising star fuels adli debate with award nomination

Ibrahim Maza has been named among the nominees for the Bundesliga’s Best Young Player award for the 2025–26 season, capping a remarkable breakthrough campaign with Bayer Leverkusen.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has emerged as one of the most talked-about talents in German football, with his performances drawing attention across Europe and beyond. His inclusion on the shortlist comes amid growing debate over comparisons with Yassine Adli, following comments made by Algerian coach Noureddine Zekri suggesting Adli’s superiority.

Breakthrough Season Raises Profile

Maza has enjoyed a standout campaign, featuring in 42 matches across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing seven assists. His consistent displays have elevated his status both domestically and internationally, with many now viewing him as a leading candidate to succeed Riyad Mahrez as a central figure for Algeria.

His rise has also been reflected in his market valuation, which has surged to €40 million, placing him among the most valuable Algerian players alongside Rayan Ait-Nouri. Interest from top European clubs—including Manchester City, FC Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Arsenal—has further underlined his growing reputation.

Competing for Bundesliga Recognition

Maza joins Luka Vuskovic of Hamburg and Yann Diomande of Leipzig on the shortlist for the league’s top young player honour.

According to the Bundesliga’s official platform:
“Three outstanding young players are nominated for the Best Young Player award: Yann Diomande , Ibrahim Maza, and Luka Vuckovic. Who will you choose? This is the logical group of nominees from whom the Best Young Player of the Season will be crowned, thanks to their outstanding performances.”

The selection process combines public voting, which accounts for 40% of the final result, with input from clubs and league experts, each contributing 30%.

The league added:
“Luka Vuckovic, winner of the Rookie of the Month award four times, as well as Yann Diomande and Ibrahim Maza – who each won the award twice – stood out during the 2025-2026 season.”

Key Role in Leverkusen’s Campaign

Maza’s influence at Leverkusen has grown steadily since his move from Hertha Berlin. Initially used as a substitute, he has developed into a central figure in the team’s attacking structure.

The Bundesliga’s assessment highlighted his importance:
“The Bayer Leverkusen striker has witnessed remarkable development, and in a volatile season, the attacking midfielder has been a key pillar in the team. This is evidenced by his winning the Best Young Player of the Month award twice (November and April), confirming his brilliance this season after his move from Hertha Berlin.”

It further noted:
“Maza is one of the most prominent players at Rhineland. No player at Leverkusen has had more shots on goal than him, except for Alejandro Grimaldo and Patrik Schick, and he is second in the team’s scoring charts, in addition to assists.”

Despite registering three goals and four assists in league-specific metrics, analysts suggest those numbers do not fully capture his contribution, particularly given his deeper playing role.

Debate Continues Over Adli Comparison

Maza’s nomination has reignited discussion among Algerian fans, particularly in light of Zekri’s earlier remarks favouring Adli. The debate has intensified as Maza continues to compete for individual honours in one of Europe’s top leagues.

A Star in the Making

Maza’s first full Bundesliga season has firmly established him as one of the continent’s most promising young players. Whether he secures the award or not, his trajectory suggests he is poised to play a significant role both at club level and for Algeria in the years ahead.
