Iheanacho strikes late to send Celtic level with leaders

Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho says he is delighted to have made a decisive contribution after coming off the bench to secure a crucial victory for Celtic against Hibernian.

The striker scored shortly after being introduced in the second half as Celtic claimed a 2-1 win on Sunday, a result that sees them draw level on points with league leaders Hearts, who still have a game in hand. That fixture is set to take place against Rangers on Monday in what is expected to be a pivotal encounter in the title race.

Iheanacho entered the match in the 70th minute with the score tied and made an immediate impact, finding the net just two minutes later to secure all three points for his side. Speaking after the match, he expressed satisfaction with his role in the victory.

“I’m really pleased, I’m happy to be an impact in the game. For my teammates and for the club,” Iheanacho said in an interview with Sky Sports Scotland after his important goal.

The 29-year-old has been in strong form in recent weeks, registering four goals in his last five appearances. This marks his most productive spell since joining Celtic as a free agent in 2025. Iheanacho highlighted his readiness to contribute whenever called upon, whether as a starter or substitute.

“I’m always ready, whether I’m starting or coming on. Need to just get my head straight, great finish. We win the game, three points, it’s important for us going forward,” he added.

The match itself presented a different kind of challenge for Celtic, as Hibernian were reduced to 10 men early on. Midfielder Jamie McGrath was sent off in the 21st minute, leaving the visitors to play the majority of the game with a numerical disadvantage.

Despite this, Celtic needed time to break down their opponents, who defended resolutely. Iheanacho pointed to patience as a key factor in eventually finding the breakthrough.

“We need patience to move them side to side, to create the chances and the space. We did that and we scored through a set-piece. That’s what matters,” Iheanacho added.

The victory keeps Celtic firmly in contention at the top of the table, with the title race intensifying as the season progresses. Attention now turns to the outcome of Hearts’ upcoming fixture, which could prove significant in determining the standings.

For Iheanacho, however, the immediate focus remains on maintaining momentum and continuing to contribute to his team’s push for success.
