Nuno Mendes says Cristiano Ronaldo and all other absent players would be welcomed back into the Portugal squad, following the team’s 2-1 victory over Norway in the fourth round of the Nations League.
The result was Portugal’s second win against Norway in the competition and strengthened their position in the group. However, attention remained focused on Ronaldo’s continued absence after his recent dispute with manager Jorge Jesus and his departure from the national team camp.
Speaking on television after the match, Paris Saint-Germain defender Mendes said Portugal’s players would be pleased to see their captain return.
“It is natural that we welcome any player. We are happy with the results we have achieved and, if Cristiano returns, we will welcome him with open arms and be very happy to have him with us,” said Mendes.
He added: “Whether it is Cristiano or any other player who is currently absent, everyone is always welcome to join the team again.”
Mendes’ comments suggested that Ronaldo’s absence is not being viewed by the squad as a problem within the group. The defender also stressed that Portugal remain united, rejecting speculation that the captain’s situation had caused divisions in the dressing room.
“We are a united group, and we will be happy for any player to return to the national team,” he said.
Portugal have continued to produce strong performances and results in the Nations League, while questions remain over Ronaldo’s future with the side. His next involvement will be closely watched after the recent dispute with Jorge Jesus, with the timing of his possible return to the squad still unclear.
