Zinedine Zidane backs Cristiano Ronaldo amid growing Portugal controversy

Zinedine Zidane has offered Cristiano Ronaldo public support as the Portugal captain faces one of the most contentious periods of his career.

Ronaldo has come under sustained criticism in recent weeks, including renewed debate over his standing in the long-running comparison with Lionel Messi. That discussion has increasingly favoured the Argentina forward, although Ronaldo has continued to score despite a decline in his scoring rate, according to French website Foot Mercato.

The latest controversy has centred not only on Ronaldo’s performances but also on his conduct while on international duty with Portugal. The 41-year-old was reportedly unhappy with decisions made by manager Jorge Jesus during the international break.

Ronaldo started Portugal’s first match of the period but remained on the substitutes’ bench for the full 90 minutes of the second. He was expected to begin the third game among the substitutes before leaving the national team’s training camp.

Reports have suggested that Ronaldo is seriously considering retiring from international football, adding further uncertainty to his future with Portugal.

Amid the criticism, Zidane delivered a message of support for his former player and praised the contribution Ronaldo made during their time together at Real Madrid.

Speaking at a news conference on Sunday, Zidane said: “We must celebrate his remarkable career. I was fortunate to have him with me because he helped me win many trophies. Salute to Cristiano! I have always had great respect for everyone I spent time with.”

Zidane worked closely with Ronaldo at Real Madrid and was part of a highly successful period for the club. His comments underline the admiration he retains for the forward and recognise the impact Ronaldo had during their shared spell in Spain.

The former Real Madrid manager’s words provide a clear show of support at a time when Ronaldo is facing questions over both his international role and his behaviour within the Portugal squad. They may also offer the 41-year-old encouragement as uncertainty continues to surround his future with the national team.
