South Africa’s United Rugby Championship campaign produced contrasting results in round two, with the Sharks and Lions maintaining their unbeaten records while the Stormers and Bulls suffered defeats on European tours.
The Stormers were beaten 17-13 by Edinburgh on 2 October after failing to make the most of their opportunities at the DAM Health Stadium.
Siya Kolisi’s return provided a boost for the Western Cape side, who matched Edinburgh’s physical challenge for long periods. However, the hosts repeatedly disrupted the Stormers at lineout time and stayed in the contest through a series of penalties.
Paul Hill scored the first try of the match in the 57th minute, but Hacjivah Dayimani soon restored the Stormers’ lead. Edinburgh responded late on, with Rory Mchaffie crossing to secure victory.
The Lions produced South Africa’s first win of the round, beating Ospreys 35-19 at Ellis Park on 3 October.
Ospreys arrived in Johannesburg still carrying the effects of their heavy defeat by the Sharks in round one, but the visitors competed strongly and were never completely out of the match.
The Lions enjoyed spells of control and did enough to claim a bonus-point victory. Kelly Mpeku scored twice, while Francke Horn delivered an influential performance across the field and was named Player of the Match.
The Sharks then defeated Leinster 26-20 in Durban on Saturday in a closely fought encounter between two sides involved in a series of momentum shifts.
Leinster, the defending champions, were undermined by indiscipline. The Sharks scored their second try after the visitors were reduced to 14 men, although the result remained in doubt until Edwill van der Merwe intercepted the ball and crossed the whitewash.
Leinster scored a late consolation try while the clock was in the red, but the Sharks held on to record their second bonus-point win in succession. The result moved the Durban franchise to the top of the combined URC standings, while the Sharks and Lions remained in the top three.
The Bulls’ tour ended in a 26-22 defeat by Munster in Limerick on Saturday, despite the Pretoria side entering the match with confidence after beating Zebre in the opening round.
Munster youngster Charlie O’Shea proved decisive, scoring two tries and adding three conversions in a match-winning display.
The Bulls’ defence provided encouragement, but their attacking performance raised significant concerns. They struggled to turn possession and territory into points and were punished for costly errors.
The round-two results were:
Edinburgh 17-13 Stormers
Lions 35-19 Ospreys
Sharks 26-20 Leinster
Munster 26-22 Bulls
