The preparations for Ghana ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup are gathering pace with the expected arrival of newly appointed goalkeepers trainer Daniel Gasper this weekend.
Gasper has been added to the Black Stars’ technical team following the recent appointment of Carlos Queiroz as head coach. He will take up the role of first goalkeepers trainer as the team begins to intensify its build-up to the tournament.
The Portuguese coach is anticipated to begin work immediately after arriving in the country. According to reports, his first task will be to meet goalkeeper Benjamin Asare in Accra before travelling to Europe. There, he is expected to hold discussions with other goalkeepers in contention for selection, including Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Joseph Anang.
Gasper will also meet members of the Black Stars’ technical staff, among them former Ghana international Fatau Dauda, who has been named second goalkeepers trainer. The collaboration is seen as part of efforts to strengthen the team’s overall goalkeeping department ahead of the global competition.
The new appointment brings significant experience to the Ghanaian side. Gasper has worked extensively with clubs and national teams across Europe and the Middle East, earning a reputation as a seasoned goalkeeping coach. He is particularly known for his long-standing professional relationship with Queiroz, having worked alongside him during his spells in charge of Iran, Colombia and Egypt.
That familiarity is expected to play a key role in integrating Gasper quickly into the team’s setup, while also ensuring consistency in coaching philosophy. His presence is widely viewed as a move aimed at improving the performance and reliability of Ghana’s goalkeepers as they prepare to face top-level opposition.
The Black Stars’ preparations will continue later this month with a scheduled international friendly against Mexico. This will be followed by another warm-up match against Wales on 2 June, offering the team an opportunity to fine-tune tactics and assess player readiness before the tournament begins.
Ghana, four-time African champions, will be making their fifth appearance at the World Cup. They have been drawn in Group L, where they will face England, Croatia and Panama in what is expected to be a highly competitive group.
The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on 17 June. They will then take on England on 23 June before concluding their group-stage fixtures against Croatia on 27 June.
With the addition of Gasper to the technical bench and preparations stepping up, Ghana will be aiming to make a strong impression on the global stage as they seek to progress beyond the group phase.
