Riyad Mahrez is set to continue his career in Qatar after agreeing a deal with Al Shamal, according to Winwin.
The 35-year-old former Algeria international has been without a club since leaving Al Ahli. He has been training in Dubai with a personal coach to maintain his fitness and match rhythm.
Mahrez had been close to joining Al Shabab, but that move did not go through, as reported exclusively by Africafoot. He is now expected to travel to Qatar after reaching an agreement with Al Shamal on Friday.
Al Shamal finished as runners-up in the QSL last season. Mahrez is expected to sign a one-year contract with the club, which will include the option of extending the agreement for a further year.
The former Le Havre AC player is due to arrive at the beginning of the week for a medical before completing the move officially.
Mahrez will join fellow Algeria international Baghdad Bounedjah at Al Shamal. The opportunity to play in the Asian Champions League was an important factor in his decision, with Mahrez having won the competition in each of the past two seasons.
