The move would give Mahrez a new destination after his three-year spell with Al-Ahli came to an end last June.
Mahrez became a free agent following his departure from the Saudi club and has since been considering his next career move. His time at Al-Ahli ended after three seasons, during which he helped the club win the AFC Champions League.
The proposed switch to Al Shamal would allow the 35-year-old to continue playing in continental competition. The Qatari club are participating in the AFC Champions League this season, giving Mahrez the opportunity to remain involved in the competition he won with Al-Ahli.
Mahrez’s potential return to continental action could also quickly bring him up against his former club.
Al Shamal are expected to face Al-Ahli on 23 November in the AFC Champions League. If the transfer is completed and Mahrez features in that fixture, it would give him the possibility of facing his former side for the first time since leaving Saudi Arabia.
The proposed move therefore marks another stage in Mahrez’s career after his spell in the Saudi Arabian league.
His three seasons with Al-Ahli included the biggest continental achievement of his time at the club, with the Algerian helping them secure the AFC Champions League title before his departure at the end of the previous season.
Mahrez is now waiting for the remaining procedures to be completed before his move to Al Shamal becomes official.
The verbal agreement represents the latest development in his search for a new club after becoming a free agent. A short-term deal with Al Shamal would take the former Al-Ahli player into the Qatari league and give him another opportunity to compete in continental football.
The next stage is expected to be the completion of the formalities required to finalise the transfer.
Until then, Mahrez remains without an officially confirmed new club, but the agreement with Al Shamal has placed him close to beginning the next chapter of his career in Qatar.
