Cristiano Ronaldo reignites Portugal debate with social media ‘like’

Cristiano Ronaldo has become the focus of renewed controversy within the Portugal camp after liking a social media post defending his position in the national team.

The interaction came after Ronaldo left the squad following manager Jorge Jesus’ decision to leave him on the bench. According to French outlet Foot Mercato, the 41-year-old captain liked a post which said: “No one can touch Cristiano.”

The timing of the reaction has fuelled criticism and was widely interpreted as an indirect message about Ronaldo’s standing in the team.

It also comes as questions grow over the veteran forward’s role and how he will be used by Portugal during the next phase of his international career. Although Ronaldo remains one of the most prominent players in the squad, debate over his appearances and tactical role has become increasingly prominent.

The social media interaction has therefore added to the tension surrounding his relationship with the coaching staff and his position within the dressing room.

Portugal are gradually preparing for life beyond the generation that has defined the country’s recent football history, while attention continues to centre on how Ronaldo fits into the team’s plans.
