Kaizer Chiefs will attempt to end a run of disappointing results when they return to Betway Premiership action against Stellenbosch FC in two weeks’ time.
Fernando Da Cruz’s side have drawn four of their past five matches, allowing both Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates to pull further clear in the title race. Sundowns are now six points ahead of Chiefs, while Orlando Pirates have established a seven-point advantage.
The pressure will increase with an awkward home fixture against a Stellenbosch FC team led by Gavin Hunt. The Stellenbosch head coach has regularly troubled Kaizer Chiefs, dating back to his spell in charge of SuperSport United.
Hunt’s team defeated Amakhosi twice in succession earlier this season. Those results contributed to Kaizer Chiefs’ elimination from the Nedbank Cup and left them further behind in the league standings.
However, Stellenbosch FC will not have all of the players who helped them claim those victories. Even so, they remain a difficult opponent, with their organisation and unpredictability likely to pose a significant challenge. Kaizer Chiefs will at least have home advantage when the teams meet.
Da Cruz could also welcome back several players who have been sidelined by injury. Khanyisa Mayo, Langelihle Phili and Flavio Silva are among those who may be available again for the fixture.
The timing of the FIFA international break could therefore benefit Amakhosi. It has provided the squad with an opportunity to recover, regroup and prepare for a demanding sequence of matches after an extended spell without consistent results.
Kaizer Chiefs must improve quickly, with the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates scheduled for later this month. Further dropped points before that match would make it even harder for them to reduce the gap to their title rivals.
The Stellenbosch FC fixture offers Da Cruz and his players a chance to restore momentum before one of the biggest matches on the South African football calendar. A return to winning form would strengthen their position ahead of the derby, while another setback would leave them with an increasingly difficult challenge in the race at the top.
