Josep Martinez says Internazionale must respond to mistakes collectively and has insisted he remains calm despite a difficult start to the season and criticism of his performances.
The goalkeeper told La Gazzetta dello Sport that errors should be examined carefully rather than blamed on one individual, with teammates expected to support anyone struggling for form.
“I look at everything calmly, both good and bad,” Martinez said. “Anyone can make mistakes, the important thing is to analyse them, avoid repeating them, and there’s no other way.”
Martinez, who did not begin the campaign in the best personal form, said mistakes were an unavoidable part of football and could affect any member of the squad.
“When mistakes are made, you shouldn’t just focus on one person, because that’s part of football,” he added. “I’m not saying there won’t be goals without mistakes, but there will be far fewer. What happened to me could happen to others.”
The 27-year-old said unity was particularly important at a club of Internazionale’s stature, and that players should naturally help one another through difficult periods.
“For a team like Internazionale, it’s important to be united, and if someone is not in good form, you have to try to help them,” he said. “Again, everything must be natural.”
Martinez reflects on tragedy
Martinez also spoke about the death of an elderly man after he accidentally struck him last year, describing the incident as something that continues to weigh heavily on him.
“It’s something I’ll never forget, and I know it will always stay with me,” he said. “I think about it, and I try not to think too much because it consumes energy. It was a tragedy, and the only way is to look forward.”
The goalkeeper said the most difficult period had passed and that his current position at Internazionale and involvement with one of the world’s strongest national teams represented evidence of how far he had come.
“The difficult times are over, and the fact that I’m here now says it all,” Martinez said. “I’m in one of the best teams in Europe, and in one of the strongest national teams in the world.”
Martinez added that he was approaching the future with optimism and remained determined to win more honours with Internazionale, while also earning another call-up to his national team.
“I look at the future with optimism, positivity, and strong motivation,” he said. “I want to continue winning and taking championships with Internazionale, and try to get them to call me up again.”
