The long-standing relationship between Dr Irvin Khoza and Dr Patrice Motsepe extends beyond their leadership roles in South African football, with their families having maintained a close connection for many years.
Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopie Motsepe discussed the bond during an interview with Robert Marawa on Sundowns TV, explaining that the friendship between the two football figures had also shaped the relationship between their children.
Tlhopie said the younger members of both families grew up together and attended the same primary school.
“Both Dr Irvin Khoza and Dr Patrice Motsepe have a long standing relationship, and it’s one, me Mpumi and Nkosana have been able to replicate in terms of our times together and going to the same primary school as well,” Tlhopie said.
The connection therefore predates and goes beyond the positions held by the two families at Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Tlhopie, Mpumi and Nkosana developed their own friendship while growing up alongside one another, including during their time at primary school.
That family relationship exists against the backdrop of one of the most significant rivalries in South African football. The contests between Sundowns and Pirates have become among the most competitive and high-stakes fixtures in the modern domestic game.
Although the Soweto Derby remains the country’s most historically recognised rivalry, meetings between Masandawana and the Buccaneers have become particularly important in the fight for honours.
Sundowns’ sustained pursuit of success, combined with their possession-based style, has pushed Pirates to improve continually as they challenge for domestic supremacy.
The two clubs have also established contrasting strengths in recent years. Sundowns have maintained a long-term grip on the Betway Premiership title, while Pirates have developed a reputation for performing strongly in cup competitions.
The Buccaneers have repeatedly overcome Sundowns in knockout football. They defeated them on penalties in the 2023 MTN8 final before winning the 2024 Nedbank Cup final 2-1 in a dramatic contest.
Competition between the clubs extends beyond matches, with both sides regularly seeking to improve their squads and secure the best available talent in the transfer market.
Their latest meeting will take place in the MTN8 final on Saturday 10 October at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
