Goncalo Ramos says Portugal’s improved performances and run of consecutive victories are down to the influence of their coach after the team moved closer to the UEFA Nations League semi-finals with a 4-2 win away to Denmark.
Ramos scored and provided an assist in the victory, which strengthened Portugal’s position at the top of the group. Speaking to Sport TV after the match, he said the result mattered more than his own contribution.
“Another great night, not just because I scored, but also because the team played very well,” Ramos said. “This victory is important; it allowed us to consolidate our top position.”
The forward’s goal came with a left-footed toe-poke, a finish compared with the style of Romario. Ramos said it was a technique he regularly practised.
“I like to shoot this way, and I do it often in training; my team-mates all know,” he said. “This type of shot is always difficult for goalkeepers to save.”
Cristiano Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in the previous 24 hours, but Ramos said his departure had not disrupted the squad.
“It didn’t affect us,” he said. “We want to win every game. That’s enough.”
Ramos was later interviewed by RTP and was asked why Portugal appeared to be improving with every match.
“First, credit to the coach; he’s helped us tremendously,” he replied. “Our ideas are clearer. Whether in defence or attack, we know each team-mate’s specific role.”
He said the progress could be seen both in the win over Denmark and in the team’s earlier matches.
“We are improving every day, and it’s all a process,” Ramos said. “We’re very happy with this victory, another win against an excellent team in a very difficult away game. Now we must continue pushing forward.”
Portugal’s high pressing was also raised during the interview. Ramos said the approach fitted his preferred style and had helped the team regain possession in dangerous areas.
“Yes, I also like to play this way,” he said. “It suits my playing style very well. We recovered many balls in areas where we could create danger, and this style of play is very effective for us.”
Winning the ball back in the opposition half, he added, gave Portugal a better platform from which to create chances, something he felt was evident in the match in Denmark.
Asked whether he was receiving more opportunities in the team, Ramos said he was pleased with his growing contribution but stressed that the result remained the priority.
“Of course, it’s always good to score goals, contribute to the team, and provide assists like today,” he said. “The most important thing is victory.”
He also acknowledged the competition for places within the squad, saying every player offered quality and that the coach had numerous options.
“Of course, I’m happy to further cement my position in the team,” Ramos added.
