Nico Williams has left the Spain camp after reporting discomfort in his left thigh and will return to Athletic Bilbao for treatment.
The winger scored Spain’s fourth goal in their 4-1 victory over Croatia on Tuesday, finding the net in the 89th minute during the second round of matches in the UEFA Nations League group stage.
The Spanish Football Federation confirmed that Williams would not be replaced for the remaining two matches of the international break. Spain are due to face the Czech Republic in Oviedo on Saturday before meeting Croatia again in Split on Tuesday.
La Roja will therefore complete the camp with one fewer player in the squad.
“Nico Williams is leaving the Spain camp,” a statement from the national team’s press office said. “The international player reported discomfort in his left thigh after the match played against Croatia in Seville.
“His condition was closely monitored during the day off, but as the discomfort persisted, he did not take part in Thursday’s training session.”
The federation said medical tests had been carried out by its medical services before the decision was taken to release the player.
“Following the medical examinations conducted today by the Spanish Football Federation’s medical services, it was decided that he should leave the current camp to continue his recovery,” the statement added.
“Athletic Bilbao’s medical staff have been kept informed of the player’s progress at all times. He will continue his treatment and recovery under the supervision of his club.”
Williams’ departure reduces Spain’s options on the wings for their two remaining fixtures, although the federation has decided against calling up a replacement.
Spain, the reigning European Championship and World Cup winners, sit top of their UEFA Nations League group with six points. They opened the campaign with a 3-2 win over England before beating Croatia 4-1.
Williams’ goal against Croatia completed a convincing victory for Luis de la Fuente’s side, but the 22-year-old will now continue his recovery away from the national-team camp.
