Cristiano Ronaldo supporters have flooded the Portugal national team’s social media pages with calls to unfollow the account following the controversy surrounding his departure from camp.
The reaction came on 1 October beneath a post about Portugal women’s international Tatiana Pinto. The official Portugal account had celebrated her latest goal for Juventus Women, writing: “Fiery footsteps! 🏹Tatiana Pintoscores again for Juventus Women, her 5th goal of the season.”
Although the post had no direct connection with Ronaldo or the Portugal men’s national team, much of the discussion in the comments quickly turned to the forward.
One supporter wrote: “Let’s all unfollow.” Another asked: “Is everyone going to unfollow?”
Further comments included: “Unfollow Portugal 👏” and “I will keep unfollowing until the legend Ronaldo returns. ❌”
Another fan posted: “Unfollowed account@portugal, done. ✅”
Several supporters also credited Ronaldo with raising the profile of the Portugal national team.
“It was Ronaldo who introduced us to the Portuguese national team,” one comment said. “Without Ronaldo, we wouldn’t even know this team existed. We watch Portugal’s matches solely for Ronaldo. The greatest player in football history.”
Another fan wrote: “No Ronaldo, no Portugal.”
A separate comment read: “Ronaldo leaves, I leave too, unfollow.”
The message “No Ronaldo, no Portugal. #unfollow” was also posted, while another supporter claimed: “Ronaldo is greater than Portugal’s history.🐐🔥”
Some fans used the comments to reflect on Ronaldo’s relationship with his country.
“Ronaldo is the best thing that could have happened to Portugal, but Portugal is the worst thing that could have happened to Ronaldo,” one supporter wrote.
The comments followed the controversy over Ronaldo leaving the Portugal camp, with his supporters directing their anger at an official national-team account despite its post focusing on Tatiana Pinto and Juventus Women.
