Saudi Arabia and Qatar meet in the Gulf 27 semi-final with more than a place in the final at stake, as a long-running rivalry returns in a match where there will be no opportunity to recover from mistakes.
The fixture will be the 41st meeting between the two national teams in all competitions. Saudi Arabia have the stronger overall record, winning 18 of the previous 40 encounters compared with Qatar’s seven. The other 15 matches ended in draws.
Saudi Arabia have also scored more goals across those meetings, finding the net 53 times, while Qatar have scored 29.
The first meeting between the sides took place at the Gulf Cup in 1970 and ended in a 1-1 draw. It was the beginning of a series of closely contested matches, although Saudi Arabia gradually established an advantage in the number of victories.
The biggest win in the history of the fixture remains Saudi Arabia’s 7-0 victory over Qatar at the 1979 Gulf Cup. It is still the largest margin by which either side has beaten the other. Saudi Arabia also recorded emphatic wins of 4-0 at the 1972 Gulf Cup and 3-1 at the 1974 tournament.
Qatar have produced some important results against Saudi Arabia in recent years. Their most notable success came at the 2019 Asian Cup, when they won 2-0. Saudi Arabia responded in December of the same year with a 1-0 victory over Qatar in the Gulf Cup semi-final.
The two teams have repeatedly crossed paths in the Gulf Cup, making the fixture an established part of the competition’s history.
At the 2014 edition, they played out a 1-1 draw in the group stage before meeting again in the final. Qatar claimed the title with a 2-1 victory.
Their rivalry has also produced significant Asian Cup encounters. Qatar won 2-0 in the group stage of the 2019 tournament, while the teams drew 0-0 at the 2000 Asian Cup.
Although the historical statistics clearly favour Saudi Arabia, more recent meetings suggest a much closer contest. Qatar have become increasingly capable of challenging Saudi Arabia and securing important results against them, meaning the historical record alone cannot determine who will reach the final.
The stakes are heightened by the knockout format. The winner will secure a place in the Gulf 27 final, while the loser will leave the tournament before its final match.
Saudi Arabia can draw confidence from their knowledge of the opposition and their superior record in previous meetings. Qatar, however, know they have already caused Saudi Arabia problems and recorded notable victories over them. That history adds a psychological element to the tactical contest expected on the pitch.
