Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been described as one of Major League Soccer’s leading centre-backs after making an impressive comeback for Chicago Fire.
The Bafana Bafana defender returned to the team at the weekend in Chicago Fire’s 1-0 win over Charlotte FC, helping his side keep a clean sheet with a composed performance.
Mbokazi, 21, joined the American club in January after leaving Orlando Pirates and has quickly become an important part of Chicago’s defensive structure.
His display against Charlotte has now been recognised by MLS, which highlighted the South African’s influence since his move to the United States.
“Simply put, it’s hard to overstate Mbokazi’s impact on Chicago’s defensive setup. The same was true for South Africa when he was shining at this summer’s FIFA World Cup,” an MLS report stated.
The league also praised the centre-back’s pace, positioning and physical strength in a detailed assessment of his performance.
“With elite defensive range, Mbokazi’s ability to sweep up danger behind the Fire’s backline has proven crucial in 2026. That was certainly the case for Berhalter’s outfit over the weekend.
“Up against a Charlotte team eager to get out in transition, Mbokazi made it his mission to snuff out their host’s quick attacking forays. But it’s not just the youngster’s ability to get out and run that impresses. It’s also strength that creates a knack for winning the ball.”
The comments underline the reputation Mbokazi has developed since arriving in MLS. His ability to cover space behind the defensive line was particularly important against a Charlotte side looking to attack quickly in transition.
Mbokazi’s return is also significant for Chicago Fire after he spent time out through injury. The club now has another defensive option as it moves into the business end of the season.
His progress will also be welcomed by Bafana Bafana, with the defender continuing to develop after establishing himself at international level. The praise from MLS follows a return in which Mbokazi immediately helped restore defensive stability for Chicago Fire.
At 21, the centre-back has already made a strong impression in the United States, and his latest performance has strengthened his standing among the league’s defenders.
