Roma may revive their interest in Endrick during the winter transfer window after a phone call from Mourinho persuaded the forward to remain at Real Madrid this summer, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Italian club had been close to reaching an agreement for the Brazilian, who could have played against Real Madrid at the Stadio Olimpico on October 14. Endrick had been expected to line up for Roma in that Champions League fixture and was considered a genuine candidate to start.
Roma sporting director D’Amico had worked discreetly on the deal and obtained Real Madrid’s approval. The initial proposal was a loan with an option to buy, before negotiations moved towards a straight loan that could potentially be extended.
Endrick was also interested in the transfer. He had accepted that regular opportunities at Real Madrid would be difficult to secure following Mbappe’s arrival. Earlier, he had spent time on loan at Lyon to maintain his match fitness before the Copa America.
The move would have seen Endrick join Roma and work under De Rossi, but the transfer collapsed after Mourinho contacted the player directly.
“Don’t worry, stay, and I will give you opportunities,” Mourinho told Endrick, according to the report.
Endrick was not fully convinced, but found it difficult to reject Mourinho’s assurance. So far, however, that promise has not translated into significant playing time.
The 2006-born winger has made just one appearance this season, playing 4 minutes against Elche. Ancelotti has acknowledged the difficulty facing the young forward, while also stressing the importance of regular football in his development.
“The problem with young Brazilian players is that they cannot develop because they don’t play. This is the case with Endrick, and also with talents like Estevao,” Ancelotti said. “Without playing time, they cannot improve. We have many very gifted young players, and we must prioritize their development. Endrick will be an important player for Brazil in the future, but he must play.”
The lack of opportunities has prompted Endrick’s representatives to contact Real Madrid again. A January loan is now being considered, following the same route as his previous spell at Lyon.
Roma remain interested and are ready to reopen discussions. De Rossi believes Endrick is capable of operating in every attacking position, while the club continue to lack a creative forward with his qualities.
Endrick is willing to move to Roma, but the deal would require Mourinho’s approval. If that permission is not given, Roma will turn their attention to alternative targets.
