Argentina marked the beginning of life without Lionel Messi with a dominant 4-0 friendly victory over Bolivia at Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes.
Lautaro Martinez, Nico Paz, new captain Cristian Romero and substitute Flaco Lopez were on target for Lionel Scaloni’s side in Cordoba on Wednesday.
The match was Argentina’s first since Messi announced his international retirement and their opening fixture since a 1-0 defeat by Spain in the World Cup final.
The hosts took control in the 19th minute when Martinez found the net with a powerful, low finish. Paz, who plays for Como, doubled the lead by delicately lifting the ball over the goalkeeper.
Gianluca Prestianni came close to adding another before the interval, striking the crossbar with a cross-shot.
Argentina continued to dominate after the break and extended their advantage in the 54th minute. Paz delivered a free-kick into the area and Romero rose to head it home.
Lopez completed the scoring late on with his first Argentina goal. The substitute had earlier seen another effort ruled out for offside.
Argentina’s attack adapts without Messi
Scaloni’s team face more demanding challenges following Messi’s retirement, although the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has not yet formally ended his international career.
Argentina are due to give Messi a farewell when they play Benin next week.
There was little sign of difficulty in his absence against Bolivia, however. Argentina allowed their opponents only three shots, none of them on target, while producing 18 attempts themselves.
Their control was also reflected in the expected goals figures, with Argentina recording 2.24 compared with Bolivia’s 0.11.
Without Messi, greater responsibility in attack is expected to fall on Martinez, Paz and Julian Alvarez.
Paz and Alcaraz attempted three shots each, the joint-highest total for Argentina. Martinez led the team for touches inside the opposition penalty area, with seven.
Paz was also one of Argentina’s main creative outlets, making three chances. That was the joint-best total for the hosts alongside Franco Mastantuono, another young player hoping to contribute as Argentina begin to replace the influence of one of football’s greatest players.
