Fermin Lopez says Anthony Gordon was the Barcelona arrival who surprised him most during the summer transfer window, after the England winger impressed him with his early performances for the club.
The midfielder is enjoying one of the strongest periods of his career after overcoming the disappointment of missing the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Lopez was ruled out of the tournament after suffering a fracture to the metatarsal in his right foot.
He has since returned at full strength and made an impressive start to the season with both Barcelona and Spain. Lopez has scored four goals and provided two assists in the opening rounds of La Liga, form which led Spain manager Luis de la Fuente to include him in his squad for the latest international break.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo from Spain’s training camp in Las Rozas, Lopez discussed his performances for club and country before being asked which of Barcelona’s new signings had made the biggest impression on him.
He first referred to Rodri, saying: “I already knew him, so I was not surprised either.”
Lopez then identified Gordon as the player who had caught him most off guard.
“We faced Newcastle several times in the Champions League, but I did not see that much of him,” he said. “I did not watch many matches and, honestly, I was very surprised.”
The Barcelona midfielder praised Gordon’s ability and said the winger could make a significant contribution to the team.
“He is a player who will help us a lot,” Lopez added.
His comments pointed to the qualities Gordon can bring to Barcelona, including aspects of the team’s play that were not available to the same extent last season.
Lopez also believes Gordon has adapted quickly to his new surroundings. The England international has settled well within the squad and developed a good understanding with his team-mates, something that has been reflected in his performances since joining Barcelona.
Gordon’s arrival has coincided with Lopez’s own return to prominence. After missing the World Cup because of his injury, the midfielder has re-established himself at club level and earned another opportunity with the Spain national team.
The strong opening to the campaign has made Lopez an important figure for Barcelona, while his assessment of Gordon suggests he considers the winger a valuable addition to the squad.
