Patrick Vieira’s ‘Manio Sané’ slip draws ridicule ahead of Senegal debut

Patrick Vieira has come under early scrutiny as Senegal coach after mispronouncing the name of star forward Sadio Mané at a press conference before his first match in charge.

Vieira referred to the Senegal legend as “Manio Sané” while discussing his absence ahead of Senegal’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Mozambique.

“We’re talking about Manio Sané, who is a truly great player and an example for young players , ” the French coach said.

The mistake quickly spread on social media, with some Senegal fans making fun of the new coach’s error while others used it to question his connection to the national team.

Some critics interpreted the slip as evidence that Vieira lacked commitment to the job, while others revived suggestions that his decision to take the position was motivated largely by the financial benefits associated with it.

However, the incident appears to have been a simple verbal mistake rather than evidence that Vieira was unfamiliar with Mané.

Mané is Senegal’s all-time leading scorer and has been one of the most recognisable figures in the country’s football for more than a decade.

Vieira’s comments came during his first major press conference ahead of a competitive match since succeeding Pape Thiaw as Senegal coach.

The former France international is taking charge of a side carrying significant expectations following Senegal’s disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign.

That has placed Vieira under close attention even before he has had the opportunity to manage his first game.

The “Manio Sané” incident is also not the first time the coach has struggled with the pronunciation of one of his new players’ names.

During his official presentation, Vieira mispronounced the name of Bayern Munich prospect Bara Sapoko Ndiaye.

On its own, that mistake attracted little significance. But its combination with the later Mané error has given critics more material to question and ridicule the new coach.

Vieira has nevertheless spoken positively about his relationship with Senegal and his reasons for accepting the job.

During his presentation, he described the opportunity to coach the country as an “absolute dream” and spoke of his happiness at returning to the country where he and his parents were born.

The two pronunciation errors do not, by themselves, establish that Vieira lacks interest in Senegal or its players.

But the episode highlights the level of attention facing the new coach as he begins his tenure.

With Senegal’s first 2027 AFCON qualifying match approaching, Vieira will now have the opportunity to move the focus away from his words and towards his team’s performance.

Senegal face Mozambique in Maputo on Friday in Vieira’s first match as coach.

The encounter will mark the beginning of his competitive tenure, with the coach’s early decisions and the team’s performance likely to attract further attention after the controversy surrounding his first press conference.
