Ousmane Dembele has backed Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, despite Kylian Mbappe being among the leading names in contention for the prestigious individual award.
The France and PSG forward made his choice during a joint interview with Kvaratskhelia two days before the Classique against Olympique Marseille. The pair discussed the Ballon d’Or race and revealed who they believe should receive the award.
Dembele selected Kvaratskhelia, praising the Georgian winger’s performances during the season and describing him as the best player in the world.
“I would be very happy, he deserves it too. His season has been exceptional. For me, he is the best player in the world. He deserves to win the Ballon d’Or.”
Kvaratskhelia’s case has been strengthened by his contribution to PSG’s successful campaign, with the Georgian having won the UEFA Champions League Player of the Year award.
His performances have placed him among the players being considered for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with the winner due to be announced on 26 October.
Mbappe is also among the prominent contenders. The Real Madrid and France striker has previously spoken about his ambition to win the award and remains one of the major names in the race.
The latest comments come amid a series of exchanges between Mbappe and Dembele over the 2026 Ballon d’Or competition.
Despite being a contender himself, Dembele played down the idea of placing his own name at the top of the list. The PSG forward said the team’s achievements and collective effort remain more important to him than individual recognition.
“The coach reminds us daily of the need to prioritize the team and not think about ourselves. This is normal.”
Dembele added that he was uncomfortable presenting himself as the leading candidate for the award.
“Personally, I don’t like to put myself first. It’s not good to do that. What’s most important are the moments of joy we share with our teammates on the pitch.”
Kvaratskhelia, however, did not return the favour by choosing Dembele as his own preferred winner.
The Georgian forward backed his PSG team-mate, highlighting Dembele’s contribution to the team and the qualities he brings to the side.
“I will vote for Osman. For his playing style and the way he supports the team. His ability to lead the team is very important to us. He is an amazing player. We are very happy to have him on the team.”
The contrasting choices from the two PSG players add another dimension to the race, with Dembele supporting Kvaratskhelia while the Georgian has chosen the French forward as his preferred candidate.
