Mauritanian international El Hadji Ba has announced his retirement from professional football after more than 25 years in the game.
The 33-year-old midfielder confirmed his decision on Thursday, 10 September 2026, bringing an end to a career that began when he was just six years old at CSL Aulnay.
Ba developed through the French football system before playing for several clubs across Europe and eventually returning to Mauritania, where he ended his career with FC Nouadhibou.
His professional journey included spells with Le Havre AC, Sunderland, SC Bastia, Charlton Athletic, Stabæk, FC Sochaux-Montbéliard, RC Lens, EA Guingamp and Apollon Limassol.
He also spent time with FC Sochaux-Montbéliard during the 2017-18 season, making 25 official appearances for the club in the Yellow and Blue jersey.
Ba’s career also included a significant international decision.
Having represented France at youth level with the U18, U19 and U20 teams, the midfielder later chose to represent Mauritania at senior level.
That decision allowed him to wear the colours of the Mourabitounes and become part of the country’s international football set-up.
In announcing his retirement, Ba reflected on the long journey from his childhood beginnings to professional football.
“When I think back to the little boy who started playing at CSL Aulnay at 6 years old, I realize the journey I’ve traveled… The dream became reality thanks to God.”
His retirement announcement was accompanied by an emotional message in which he thanked those who had supported him throughout his career.

Ba expressed gratitude to his family, coaches and teammates, crediting them with helping him turn a childhood ambition into a professional career.
He also thanked Mauritanian Football Federation president Ahmed Yahya for his confidence and for giving him the opportunity to represent the Mourabitounes.
The midfielder’s decision marks the end of his playing career after more than two decades in professional football, during which he experienced football in several countries and represented both France and Mauritania at international level.
His club career took him through France, England, Norway, Cyprus and Mauritania, reflecting the breadth of his experience across European and African football.
His final club was FC Nouadhibou, bringing his playing journey back to his country after years spent competing abroad.
