Abderrahmene Boungab: ES Setif’s young playmaker ready to fulfil his promise

Abderrahmene Boungab is beginning his second season in professional football with growing expectations at ES Setif, after a delayed emergence that has already earned him recognition from Algeria’s Under-23 set-up.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder is the 21st player featured in the #TalentsAlgeriens series, which highlights 25 young footballers to watch in Algeria’s Ligue 1 during the 2026-27 season. The ranking is necessarily subjective and considers not only natural ability, but also each player’s potential, expected role at club level and the importance of the campaign to their development.

At Setif, there has long been a belief that Boungab would eventually break into the first team. Born on 25 May 2006 and raised in Amoucha, in the Setif wilaya, he had already made a strong impression in the club’s youth ranks.

His route to senior football, however, has been slowed by several obstacles. A knee problem, a slower physical development than some of his peers and other difficulties meant that his progress did not follow a straightforward path. It was only towards the end of last season that his ability began to make a clear impression at senior level.

Since then, the signs have become increasingly encouraging. Boungab completed a full pre-season with the first team, scored in friendly matches and was recently called up to the Algeria Under-23 squad managed by Rafik Saifi.

Mourad Bellal knows the midfielder’s development particularly well. The former ES Setif youth coach worked with Boungab and also helped develop several players who later became important figures for the club, including Abdelmoumene Djabou and Akram Djahnit.

Speaking to Africafoot, Bellal made clear the high regard in which he holds his former player. He also believes Boungab did not always benefit from the most favourable environment during his development. That assessment reflects the confidence felt by many around Setif that an opportunity would eventually present itself.

A gradual introduction to the first team

That opportunity began to emerge late last season. Milutin Sredojevic had started bringing Boungab into the senior group before Lotfi Amrouche took charge, although the circumstances were not particularly suitable for introducing large numbers of young players.

Sofiane Benkhelifa, a coach and youth developer who has worked with USMA and Olympique Akbou, joined the ES Setif staff alongside Amrouche. He recalls how the coaching team began to take a closer look at Boungab.

The midfielder’s performances have even prompted comparisons within Setif’s football community with Malik Zorgane, one of the club’s great figures from the late 1980s and early 1990s.

It would be premature to suggest that Boungab will follow the same path. He is only just beginning his professional career. But the comparison reflects the qualities some observers see in him: the ability to read situations early, select the right pass and improve the players around him.

Bellal regards him primarily as a playmaker whose instincts are directed towards collective football. Boungab is not simply a player who distributes possession, though. His former coach also highlights other aspects of his game, while Benkhelifa believes he can operate at several different levels of midfield.

That versatility could prove valuable as he establishes himself among the senior players. Boungab has the technical quality to play close to the forwards, but also enough tactical understanding to begin attacks from deeper positions and support moves further up the pitch.

His recent inclusion in the Algeria Under-23 squad has strengthened the sense that he is progressing quickly, although those who know him remain conscious that he is still a developing player.

Imad Bella, a former ES Setif player who is now an agent and remains close to the club’s environment, has identified two particular areas in which Boungab must improve.

Physical progress remains important

His previous physical difficulties help explain why his breakthrough came later than expected. Boungab suffered a knee problem while still in the youth system and required surgery.

Bellal nevertheless believes the midfielder’s body is now responding better to the demands of senior football. For the first time, Boungab is approaching a professional season after completing a full programme of preparation, rather than immediately having to make up ground physically.

There are also positive indications regarding his character. Bellal describes him as the opposite of the type of young player who must be constantly corrected or disciplined. He is not considered especially vulnerable to the pressure that comes with making an impression at a demanding club such as ES Setif.

At 20, Boungab’s talent is no longer in doubt. The next test will be whether his body, after years of setbacks, can withstand the intensity of a full professional campaign.

At ES Setif, some are already imagining him in the club’s coveted number 10 role. Now Boungab has the chance to show whether he can live up to those expectations.
