Ministry of Sports for DR Congo has issued a strong warning to supporters after reports emerged of individuals falsely claiming to be organising travel packages for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as excitement builds over the country’s long-awaited return to football’s biggest stage.
DR Congo, who are preparing for their first World Cup appearance in over five decades, have seen growing public enthusiasm as fans look ahead to the tournament hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
However, authorities say this surge in interest has also created an opportunity for fraudsters targeting hopeful supporters.
In an official statement released late last week, the Ministry of Sports made it clear that no government-backed travel arrangements for fans have been launched.
It also stressed that no individuals or organisations have been authorised to collect money or organise trips linked to the tournament.
“The Ministry of Sports and Recreation informs the public that, as part of the support provided to the Leopards for the 2026 World Cup, no sales, fundraising, or payment for fan participation is authorized.
“The Ministry firmly reiterates that no individual or organization is mandated to organize or sell trips. No fees are required to support the Leopards.”
The statement further warned the public against engaging with anyone claiming to represent official structures or requesting payments in connection with World Cup travel arrangements.
“Anyone claiming to represent the Ministry and soliciting money is acting fraudulently. The public is urged not to pay any money, to verify information through official channels, and to report any suspicious activity.”
The clarification comes amid widespread anticipation in the country, where DR Congo’s qualification for the 2026 finals has been celebrated as a historic achievement.
The Leopards will compete in Group K of the tournament, where they are set to face Portugal, Uzbekistan, and Colombia.
The government says the priority at this stage is ensuring that fans receive accurate information and are not exploited during what is expected to be a highly emotional period for Congolese football supporters.
Officials have urged vigilance as preparations for the global tournament continue.
On the sporting side, head coach Sébastien Desabre has been credited with building a disciplined and competitive squad, with DR Congo earning praise for their cohesion and determination throughout the qualification campaign.
The country’s return to the World Cup stage has been described as a major milestone, ending a 52-year absence from the competition.
As preparations continue, the Ministry says it will provide updates only through official channels and reiterated that any legitimate announcements regarding supporter involvement will be clearly communicated to the public.
