Bissouma hits 200 Premier League games in milestone match

Midfielder Yves Bissouma reached a significant career milestone in the Premier League as Tottenham Hotspur drew 2-2 with Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

The 29-year-old made his 200th appearance in England’s top flight, becoming the second most-capped Malian player in Premier League history. Only Abdoulaye Doucouré, with 258 appearances, has played more matches among players from the West African nation.

The landmark occasion carried added significance as it came against Brighton, the club where Bissouma first established himself in English football. Having joined the south coast side from Lille in 2018, he went on to make 124 appearances over four seasons, earning recognition for his performances in midfield before securing a move to Tottenham in 2022.

Bissouma was named in the starting line-up for the match on 18 April and delivered a strong display in central midfield before being substituted in the 57th minute. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, in what proved to be a competitive encounter between the two sides.

His latest appearance places him just behind Doucouré in the all-time list of Malian players in the Premier League. Doucouré accumulated his total across spells with Watford and Everton between 2017 and 2025.

Despite the achievement, Bissouma’s season has been disrupted by injury. He has featured in only nine league matches so far, limiting his influence during much of the campaign. However, with his return to fitness, Tottenham could yet benefit from his experience during a crucial phase of the season.

The midfielder, who also captains Mali’s national team, is seen as a key figure in Spurs’ squad. His ability to control play and provide stability in midfield may prove vital as the club continues its efforts to maintain its position in the Premier League.

Bissouma’s journey to this milestone reflects a steady rise since his early days in France. His move from Lille to Brighton marked the beginning of his Premier League career, where he quickly adapted to the demands of English football. His subsequent transfer to Tottenham further underlined his growing reputation.

With time still on his side, Bissouma now has the opportunity to close the gap on Doucouré’s record. If he maintains his fitness and continues to feature regularly, he could eventually become Mali’s most-capped player in Premier League history.

For now, his 200th appearance stands as a testament to his consistency and longevity at the highest level, achieved on a day that also brought a reminder of his past against one of his former clubs.
