Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has been warned that his honeymoon period is over after the club began the new Premier League season with a 2-0 defeat away to Hull City.
The result has raised fresh questions about Carrick’s ability to take the team forward, despite the former midfielder having made a positive impact after replacing Ruben Amorim last season. Manchester United controlled much of the match at Hull, but their dominance did not translate into goals as they registered 21 attempts, with only five finding the target.
The defeat was the club’s fourth in their past seven Premier League matches and has increased concern among supporters before the campaign has had time to settle.
York told Reviant that Carrick’s opening period as manager had been disappointing and that Manchester United fans would not give him unlimited time because they expect results.
“Carrick’s honeymoon period is over. He deserved this opportunity, and he fulfilled the task entrusted to him, taking us into the top four quite comfortably.
“From that perspective, he deserves a chance. Now it’s time for him to step up and prove he’s a capable coach. This season will show whether he has what it takes to make that next step.”
Carrick took charge after Amorim’s departure and helped Manchester United secure Champions League qualification by finishing in the top four last season. That achievement earned him the opportunity to continue in the role, but York believes the new campaign will provide a much clearer test of his coaching credentials.
Assessing the club’s position, York added: “Manchester United have made a terrible start to the season. We were very optimistic going in because we felt the team finished well last season and secured Champions League qualification.
“In the first match, we faced a strong opponent in Hull City, and history suggests Manchester United usually handle such games well, but after just one match, we’re already under pressure.”
Manchester United’s away form was already a weakness last season. They won 13 of their 19 league matches at home, compared with only seven victories on the road. They drew eight and lost four of their away fixtures.
The loss at Hull has also produced an unwanted statistical milestone. Manchester United have now failed to score in the opening match of two successive Premier League seasons.
Despite their possession and attacking volume at Hull, they were unable to find a way through. The performance offered evidence of the control Carrick wants from his side, but also highlighted the lack of cutting edge that ultimately decided the match.
The result means Carrick faces immediate pressure to respond. While his work in securing Champions League football last season has given him credit, the expectations at Manchester United remain high and York says the manager must now demonstrate that he can build on that achievement.
