Paris Saint-Germain have decided to bring an end to Renato Sanches’ time at the club, with the European champions prepared to let the Portugal midfielder leave for no fee during the current transfer window.
Sanches still has a contract with Paris Saint-Germain until June 2027, but the club’s board is willing to release him without compensation as soon as he reaches an agreement with a new team. The decision is intended to secure a permanent exit and draw a line under a prolonged period dominated by injuries and loan spells.
According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Paris Saint-Germain believe allowing Sanches to depart for free is the simplest way to end his unsettled spell in the French capital. The midfielder has spent recent seasons moving between clubs on loan, a sequence that has seen a player once regarded as a major prospect become a difficult presence on the club’s squad list.
Sanches returned to Paris this summer after completing a loan at Panathinaikos. He made 24 appearances for the Greek club last season, starting 12 of those matches, and finished the campaign with one goal and one assist.
Although he missed periods of the season with injury, the 2016 Golden Boy managed to regain much of his physical fitness at Panathinaikos. He has also taken part fully in Paris Saint-Germain’s current pre-season training programme without suffering a further setback.
That improvement has not changed his position within the club, however. Sanches is no longer considered part of Paris Saint-Germain’s plans for the future, with the coaching staff and the administration deciding against giving him another opportunity.
The 28-year-old remains determined to continue his career in Europe. He has turned down attractive proposals from clubs in Saudi Arabia, Brazil and Major League Soccer because he wants to find a sporting project that can offer regular playing time.
Sanches is seeking the form that made him highly regarded during his earlier spells with Benfica, Bayern Munich and Lille. His career has since included periods at Swansea City, Roma and Paris Saint-Germain, after he first emerged as one of Europe’s most promising young midfielders.
Interest in the midfielder has already begun to develop. Italian club Torino and German side Union Berlin are among those monitoring his situation, while English clubs Ipswich Town and Hull City have also shown an interest in signing him.
Two unnamed clubs from Ligue 1 are also considering whether to make a move as they look to give Sanches an opportunity to revive a career that has taken him from Benfica to Bayern Munich, via Swansea City and Lille, before his transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in 2022.
The French champions’ willingness to sanction a free transfer means Sanches can now negotiate his next move without a fee being required for his former club. For Paris Saint-Germain, the arrangement would end a lengthy cycle of injuries, temporary departures and returns that has prevented the Portugal international from establishing himself in the squad.
