The Springboks were beaten by the All Blacks in the opening match of their four-Test ‘Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry’ series at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday, but debate has focused on the performance of the match officials.
English referee Matthew Carley and Scottish television match official Mike Adamson have come under scrutiny following New Zealand’s victory.
The result itself was fair and square, with the All Blacks claiming the opening win of the series. However, questions have since been raised about the influence of the officials during the match, particularly after Adamson appeared to seek Carley’s intervention on more than one occasion.
Carley ultimately overruled Adamson each time, leaving supporters to consider whether the referee made the correct decisions or whether he should have given greater weight to the TMO’s input.
Adamson had access to slow-motion replays and attempted to intervene during the game. Yet Carley remained the final decision-maker on the field and chose not to follow the TMO’s recommendations.
That has prompted a wider question about the balance between the referee’s authority and the role of the television match official. Was this an example of good refereeing combined with poor TMO decision-making? Or should Carley have paid closer attention to Adamson, given the additional replay evidence available to him?
The outcome was significant beyond the match itself. The Springboks lost the World Rugby No 1 ranking following their defeat by the All Blacks, adding further importance to the result in Johannesburg.
With the opening Test now complete, attention has turned not only to the result but also to the officiating decisions that shaped the discussion afterwards. Readers are invited to assess the performances of both Carley and Adamson independently.
Give each official a mark out of 10, with 1 representing ‘utterly useless’ and 10 meaning ‘zero complaints’. The ratings are intended to reflect your view of the referee’s performance, the TMO’s interventions and the way the two officials worked together during the contest.
Was Carley right to overrule Adamson, or did the referee miss an opportunity to make better use of the TMO’s advice? Did Adamson intervene appropriately, or should his input have been more restrained?
Let us know how you rated Carley and Adamson out of 10, using 1 for ‘utterly useless’ and 10 for ‘zero complaints’.
