Dundee moved joint-top of the early Scottish Premiership table after a deserved 2-0 win over Dundee United at Tannadice, with Drey Wright and Owen Bevan scoring to secure local bragging rights.
Wright put the visitors ahead shortly before half-time, while Bevan added a second after the interval as Steven Pressley’s side made it three victories in their past four visits across the road to United’s home.
The result gives Dundee two wins from their opening three league matches and leaves them level on six points with Celtic and St Mirren. However, Dundee have played one match more than most of their early-season rivals.
United’s difficult start continued as they suffered a third successive defeat in all competitions. Jim Goodwin’s side remain second-bottom of the Premiership, with only one point from their first three league games.
Goodwin made six changes to the team beaten 4-0 by Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup, including the return of influential left-back Will Ferry following a minor injury.
Dundee made just one enforced alteration from the side that lost to Aberdeen in the same competition. Alan Forrest came into the team for captain Simon Murray, who suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage at Pittodrie.
Swiss striker Bradley Fink was named among the substitutes after completing a season-long loan move from Wycombe earlier in the day.
Murray, despite being expected to miss a significant period, joined his Dundee team-mates for the traditional short pre-match walk from Dens Park to Tannadice.
The visitors made the brighter start and produced the first two noteworthy efforts of the match. Charlie Reilly and Joe Westley both tested United from outside the penalty area, although neither attempt opened the scoring.
United created their first clear opportunity in the 28th minute. Vicko Sevelj met Mehdi Merghem’s corner with a header, but Dundee goalkeeper Owen Goodman reacted well to push the ball away.
Dundee then had Ryan Astley to thank for an important defensive intervention. The Dee defender produced an excellent challenge inside the six-yard box to prevent Idjessi Metsoko from turning in Merghem’s low cross from the right.
The deadlock was broken two minutes before the interval. Wright intercepted a loose pass from Abdoulaye Yoro just inside the United half, drove forward and struck a powerful 20-yard shot into the bottom-right corner beyond Jack Walton.
United almost responded at the start of the second half when Yoro was presented with an opportunity to make amends. His low effort from the angle of the six-yard box was brilliantly saved by Goodman.
The Dundee goalkeeper was then involved in an unusual incident. As he went to collect the ball before taking a goal-kick in front of the United supporters, Goodman appeared to be hit by a vape.
Dundee extended their advantage in the 57th minute, although Bevan’s goal came in an unconventional fashion. After United failed to deal with Fin Robertson’s corner, Forrest drove an angled shot across the face of goal from 10 yards. Bevan inadvertently diverted the ball over the line with his heel from close range.
United pressed for a way back into the contest during the closing stages and threatened to reduce the deficit, but Dundee rarely appeared likely to surrender their control of the derby.
Pressley’s side therefore completed a memorable away victory, while United were left to reflect on a third consecutive loss and a difficult beginning to the new Premiership campaign.
