Marseille opened their 2026/27 Ligue 1 campaign with a convincing 4-0 victory over 10-man Strasbourg at the Stade Velodrome, with Amine Gouiri scoring twice as they extended their unbeaten home record in this fixture to 19 league matches.
The result means Marseille have now avoided defeat in their past 19 Ligue 1 meetings with Strasbourg at home, winning 11 and drawing eight.
Both clubs began the season under new managers following changes during the summer. Marseille’s new head coach Bruno Genesio saw his team make the more positive start, with Angel Gomes twice coming close during the opening 15 minutes.
Gomes, who has returned from a loan spell at Wolves, sent his first attempt narrowly wide of Filip Jørgensen’s goal. About 10 minutes later, the midfielder had another opportunity when the ball fell to him inside the penalty area, but he struck his effort straight at the Chelsea loanee.
Strasbourg initially struggled to impose themselves, although head coach Hugo Oliveira eventually saw his side threaten when Gessime Yassine found space and forced Jeffrey de Lange to make a save at his near post.
The best stop of the first half came from Jørgensen, however. The Strasbourg goalkeeper reacted sharply to tip Amine Harit’s curling effort over the crossbar, ensuring the visitors reached half-time with the score still level.
That reprieve lasted less than a minute after the restart.
Marseille took the lead through a move that began with Igor Paixao on the left. The Brazilian used a series of clever touches to evade one defender before finding Gomes, who laid the ball off for Gouiri. The forward applied a composed sweeping finish beyond the reach of Jørgensen to score the first goal of the new Ligue 1 season.
Strasbourg’s afternoon deteriorated further when Samir El Mourabet was shown a red card for kicking out at Marseille midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.
The numerical disadvantage soon told. Paixao took advantage of Guela Doue’s hesitation to win a penalty after drawing a clumsy challenge inside the area. Gouiri sent Jørgensen the wrong way from the spot to complete his brace and put Marseille firmly in control.
The hosts continued to press against a depleted Strasbourg side and added two more goals before the final whistle.
Substitute Keyliane Abdallah opened his senior account with a low finish at the near post. Moments later, Højbjerg completed the scoring with a controlled volley that found its way past Jørgensen.
The defeat made for a difficult first match in charge of Strasbourg for Oliveira, while Genesio’s Marseille tenure began with a dominant home performance and four different contributors on the scoresheet apart from Gouiri’s second goal.
