Teboho Mokoena has received an Excellence Award from the Free State government in recognition of his performances for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana.
The midfielder was among the sporting figures from the province honoured at the Free State Sports Awards on 15 August. The ceremony was hosted by Free State MEC for Sports Zanele Sifuba, who recognised outstanding athletes and sporting personalities from the region.
Mokoena, who was born and raised in Bethlehem, was recognised after representing both his club and country with distinction. The 29-year-old recently played for South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he scored a crucial penalty in the 1-1 draw against Czech Republic.
The honour was welcomed by the midfielder, who shared his appreciation on social media.
“Honoured to receive an Excellence Award from the Free State MEC. Grateful for where I come from and excited for what’s still ahead,” wrote Mokoena on his social media platforms.
Mokoena has represented Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana with pride since leaving the now defunct SuperSport United. His consistency in midfield has made him an important figure for both club and country.
Since joining the Brazilians, Mokoena has played 181 competitive matches, scoring 20 goals and providing 14 assists. His performances have helped establish him as one of the leading midfielders in South African football.
At international level, Mokoena has earned 54 caps for Bafana Bafana and has scored 10 goals. His contribution at the 2026 FIFA World Cup included the penalty that secured South Africa a draw against Czech Republic.
The award from the Free State adds to the recognition Mokoena has received for his work on the pitch. It also reflects the pride he continues to take in his Bethlehem roots and his connection to the province.
Mokoena’s message after the ceremony focused on gratitude for his background while looking ahead to further success with Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana.
