Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns drew 1-1 in a tense Betway Premiership encounter at FNB Stadium, with Langelihle Phili scoring his first goal for Chiefs before Cassius Mailula rescued a point for the visitors.
The match only came to life after half-time, with both sides appearing to respond to strong words from coaches Fernando da Cruz and Miguel Cardoso. Chiefs remain top of the standings with seven points from their opening three league matches and will take considerable confidence from matching a star-studded Sundowns team.
Sundowns included several players who helped the club win the Champions League last season, as well as footballers who represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 Fifa World Cup in the United States and Mexico.
The first half was short on quality and clear chances. Both teams were frequently let down by poor decision-making, and the opening serious attacking moment did not arrive until the 40th minute.
Chiefs won a free-kick just outside the penalty area, but Thabo Moloisane’s close-range header went straight at Ronwen Williams.
Sundowns then threatened on the counter-attack. Khuliso Mudau delivered a dangerous cross towards Brayan Leon, but Zitha Kwinika made an important clearance inside the box.
Chiefs had another opportunity 10 minutes after the restart when Thabiso Monyane failed to control the ball in a promising position, allowing Williams to recover and clear. In the same passage of play, Sundowns conceded a free-kick on the edge of the area, but Lebohang Maboe’s effort missed the target.
Chiefs finally broke the deadlock after 62 minutes when Siphesihle Ndlovu dribbled beyond Grant Kekana and Bathusi Aubaas before finding Phili.
On the biggest occasion of the season so far, Phili controlled the pass and fired a low shot inside the near post, beating Williams and sending the home crowd into celebration.
The attacker was visibly emotional after scoring his first goal for Kaizer Chiefs. He removed his shirt during the celebrations and was booked, prompting Da Cruz to substitute him a few minutes later to prevent the possibility of a second booking.
Sundowns levelled nine minutes later through Mailula, who had come off the bench. Mudau played a long ball into the area, Kekana directed it towards Mailula and the striker headed past Brandon Petersen, who was unable to react quickly enough.
It was possibly Mailula’s first touch of the match, and his return to Sundowns is beginning to suggest he could become an important player for the Brazilians after a frustrating period in the United States and Europe.
Cardoso will nevertheless have concerns after Sundowns struggled to impose themselves during the first half. They lacked control and failed to create clear-cut chances, while their defensive line did not get close enough to advancing Chiefs attackers before they entered the penalty area.
Da Cruz made several changes after the break, bringing on Wandile Duba, Ethan Chislett and Adolf Mtasingwa for Luke Baartman, Phili and Maboe. The replacements were unable to exert significant influence on the contest.
Cardoso also made a series of substitutions, introducing Siyanda Ndlovu, Bennet Mokoena, Mailula, Divine Lunga and Lebogang Mothiba for Antonio van Wyk, Sphelele Mkhulise, Tashreeq Matthews, Aubrey Modiba and Brayan Leon.
Chiefs had reshaped their defence before kick-off, with Reeve Frosler and Dillan Solomons left out of the starting line-up and Moloisane making his first appearance in Amakhosi colours. He produced a strong performance.
Da Cruz used a back three of Moloisane, Inacio Miguel and Kwinika, with Leon operating as Sundowns’ lone striker. Monyane and Pule Mmodi were deployed as wing-backs, while Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Siphesihle Ndlovu and Maboe formed a more defensive midfield intended to contain Marcelo Allende, Mkhulise and Aubaas.
Cardoso also changed his team from the opening match against TS Galaxy, with Kekana and Modiba replacing Malibongwe Khoza and Fawaaz Basadien. Aubaas came into midfield because of Teboho Mokoena’s injury, while Van Wyk, Matthews and Leon started in attack.
In the end, neither side could find a winner, with the two heavyweights settling for a point apiece after an increasingly competitive second half.
