Julian Alvarez’s representatives believe Atletico Madrid changed its position after encouraging the forward to speak publicly about his desire to leave, according to details reported by Sport.
The dispute centres on how Atletico Madrid communicated with Alvarez during the World Cup and what the club expected him to say about his future. Journalist Martin Arevalo claims the Argentina forward had already told the club internally that he wanted to depart before making any public comments.
According to Arevalo’s account, Atletico Madrid’s management initially encouraged Alvarez to make his wish to leave public. The intention, it is alleged, was to show supporters that the player was seeking a move rather than the club trying to force him out.
Alvarez followed that advice and publicly indicated during the World Cup that he wanted a change of environment. However, the situation reportedly changed after he made the comments.
The forward and his representatives had previously been in contact with Atletico Madrid and believed there was scope to negotiate a departure. But the club’s response became significantly firmer once Alvarez’s intentions were made public, with Atletico Madrid subsequently stressing that he was not available for transfer.
That change is said to have angered Alvarez’s camp. They believe the player acted in line with the instructions he had received from the club, only for Atletico Madrid to adopt a different position afterwards.
Arevalo said: “After he made his statement, Atletico Madrid’s management was not pleased because they didn’t expect him to do that.”
The report adds that Alvarez’s team believes the club “lied”, while both the player and his agent feel “deceived and betrayed.” Their version of events is sharply at odds with Atletico Madrid’s public position.
Chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin has repeatedly made clear that the club does not intend to allow Alvarez to leave. He has also accused Barcelona of trying to contact a player who remains under contract with Atletico Madrid and said the club would protect its interests.
The two sides therefore remain divided over both the substance of Alvarez’s future and the conversations that led to his public comments. Atletico Madrid insists the forward should remain in Madrid, while Alvarez’s representatives believe his time at the club should come to an end.
The eventual outcome is expected to depend on whether the club and the player’s camp are prepared to meet and negotiate. For now, their competing accounts have left the future of the forward unresolved.
