Morocco coach Jorge Vilda says the Atlas Lionesses have recovered from the disappointment of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final defeat and are determined to finish the tournament with a victory against Algeria.
Morocco were eliminated by Cameroon on penalties in a dramatic semi-final, ending their hopes of reaching the final on home soil.
Vilda says the players have now regained their mental balance and are focused on securing the bronze medal.
Speaking at a press conference in Rabat, the Spanish coach admitted that Morocco’s semi-final defeat was decided by “small details” and acknowledged the difficulty of losing a penalty shootout.
However, he praised his players for their mental strength and their response to the setback.
“The players have great mental strength and a clear desire to finish the competition with a win,” Vilda said.
The Atlas Lionesses will face Algeria in the third-place play-off at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00 local time.
Vilda also highlighted Morocco’s overall campaign, with the team having remained competitive throughout their five matches.
He pointed to their defensive record as evidence of the work and commitment shown by his players during the tournament.
Morocco defender Hanan Ait El Haj also insisted that the squad remains united ahead of the decisive encounter.
She said the players are determined to support one another and give their best against Algeria.
The third-place play-off now offers Morocco an opportunity to respond to their semi-final disappointment and end their home WAFCON campaign on a positive note.
