Kerim Alajbegovic explains why he chose Juventus over Chelsea

Kerim Alajbegovic says Juventus’ reputation and the club’s belief in his ability convinced him to turn down a move to Chelsea.

The 18-year-old forward attracted significant interest after an outstanding 2025-26 season, during which he scored 13 goals and supplied four assists while on loan at RB Salzburg from Bayer Leverkusen.

His form also earned him a place in Bosnia’s squad for the 2026 World Cup. Alajbegovic made his mark at the tournament by scoring in Bosnia’s 3-1 group-stage victory over Qatar, further increasing his profile among leading clubs across Europe.

Chelsea were among the clubs interested in signing him, and at one stage the teenager appeared likely to move to Stamford Bridge to work under Xabi Alonso. However, Alajbegovic ultimately rejected that opportunity and opted to join Serie A side Juventus instead.

In an interview with Tuttosport, he explained that the scale and history of the Italian club played a major role in his decision.

“When Juventus call, it is truly difficult to say no. It is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I am truly proud to wear this jersey,” he said.

Alajbegovic also highlighted the importance of Juventus showing confidence in him before he made his choice.

“It’s true, knowing the club had faith in me was really, really important for me. Pjanic was also important in my choice, because he was a Juventus player, and had so much influence with this club.”

The teenager’s decision came after a breakthrough campaign in Austria, where his goals and assists for RB Salzburg helped establish him as one of the most highly regarded young players connected with Bayer Leverkusen.

His progress was recognised at international level when Bosnia selected him for their 2026 World Cup squad. Scoring in the win over Qatar provided an early indication of his ability to perform on a major stage.

That combination of club and international form led to interest from several prominent European sides. Chelsea appeared to be in a strong position at one point, but Juventus’ status and its personal connection with Alajbegovic proved decisive.

The reference to Pjanic a former Juventus player also carried particular significance for the youngster. Alajbegovic said the former midfielder’s influence at the club helped shape his thinking as he considered where to continue his development.

Instead of joining Chelsea, Alajbegovic will now begin the next stage of his career in Italy, having chosen a Juventus move after a season that brought goals for RB Salzburg, a World Cup place with Bosnia and attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
