Pau Cubarsi has emerged as the leading contender for the 2026 Golden Boy award after a standout season with Barcelona and Spain.
The 19-year-old defender is currently top of the latest ranking for the prize, which recognises the best young player in world football. Cubarsi has also broken into the top 10 of the Ballon d’Or standings, underlining his growing influence at club and international level.
According to the latest update published by Spanish newspaper Sport on Thursday, Cubarsi leads Barcelona team-mate Lamine Yamal by 700 points in the Golden Boy rankings. Yamal won the award in 2024.
Yan Diomande, one of Real Madrid’s latest summer signings, is also among the leading contenders. The player moved to the Spanish capital for an initial fee of 125m euros, with a further 15m euros available in add-ons.
Warren Zaire-Emery, the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, is listed third and is 6,000 points behind Barcelona defender Cubarsi. The ranking also places Moroccan midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi fifth, with the player being considered as a possible replacement for Rodri at Manchester City.
The published standings contain an inconsistency over the positions immediately behind Cubarsi and Yamal, with Diomande described as completing the podium while Zaire-Emery is also listed in third place.
Barcelona have three players among the 100 nominees. Alongside Cubarsi and Yamal, midfielder Marc Bernal is ranked 20th.
Real Madrid also have three representatives in the list. In addition to Diomande, striker Endrick is eighth, while Thiago Pitarch is 40th.
Porto are the best-represented club, with five players included among the candidates. The Premier League has the largest representation of any domestic competition, supplying 26 players to the top 100.
La Liga is fifth in that comparison, with eight players. It trails the Bundesliga, which has 18 representatives, Ligue 1 with 14 and Serie A with nine.
The 2026 Golden Boy award is open to players born in 2006 or later who compete in one of Europe’s 25 leading leagues.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place in London on 26 October. Cubarsi is regarded as the strongest candidate to win an award that has been dominated by Barcelona players over the past five years.
Pedri won the prize in 2021, followed by Gavi in 2022 and Yamal in 2024. A victory for Cubarsi would extend Barcelona’s recent run of success, although the final outcome will depend on the remainder of the voting process and the performances of the other leading nominees.
