Senegal have declined an approach from the Argentine Football Association to arrange an international friendly, opting instead to uphold a prior agreement to face Gambia after Argentina made contact three days ago.
The decision underscores Senegal’s commitment to an already scheduled fixture against their regional neighbours, despite the appeal of a high-profile encounter with the South American side.
The Senegalese football authorities have prioritised reliability and respect for existing arrangements over the prospect of a more globally prominent match.
According to the brief statement, Senegal chose to honour their agreement to play the Gambia national team, reaffirming their intention to proceed with the planned fixture.
“We can’t do that to Gambia. We’re sticking with our match,” the President of FSF said.
A potential meeting with Argentina would likely have drawn significant global attention, given the stature associated with the South American nation as defending champions of the World Cup and Senegal as 2025 AFCON holders.
However, Senegal’s decision indicates that such considerations did not outweigh their existing obligations.
Instead, focus remains on the upcoming match against Gambia, a fixture that carries its own importance.
Regional encounters can foster local rivalries and strengthen ties within the football community, even if they do not command the same international spotlight as games involving globally recognised teams.
The decision has been framed as a matter of principle, with Senegal choosing commitment over a high-profile clash after Argentina made contact three days ago.
For now, attention turns to the forthcoming encounter with Gambia, as Senegal continue their preparations in line with their existing schedule.
Senegal will take on Gambia on March 31. In the World Cup, Senegal face Norway and France in Group I, with one final opponent yet to be confirmed.
