Paris Saint-Germain have won the European Super Cup after beating Aston Villa 2-1, with goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue securing another major honour for the French side. The Parisians had to wait until the second half to establish a decisive advantage, after Brian Madjo’s equaliser had briefly brought Aston Villa level.
PSG started the match strongly and quickly took control of possession and territory. Their early pressure created several attacking opportunities, as they looked to impose themselves on a game between the European champions and Aston Villa.
That sustained pressure was rewarded after 20 minutes. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia finished a move to put Paris Saint-Germain ahead and give the European champions the lead they had begun to look capable of earning.
Aston Villa responded before the interval, refusing to allow PSG to take a lead into half-time. Brian Madjo scored in the 45th minute to restore parity, leaving the two teams level at 1-1 as they headed into the dressing rooms.
The equaliser changed the mood of the contest, but it did not prevent PSG from regaining the initiative after the restart. Paris resumed their attacking approach and continued to look for the opening that would put them back in front.
Their efforts eventually paid off in the 62nd minute. Desire Doue found the breakthrough to restore PSG’s advantage and put the French club in a favourable position with much of the second half still to play.
Aston Villa then attempted to force another equaliser and bring the contest back on level terms. The English side pushed forward in search of a way through, but PSG’s defence resisted the pressure.
Paris Saint-Germain held on until the final whistle to complete a 2-1 victory. The result adds the European Super Cup to the club’s honours, strengthening the significance of a period in which they have already claimed the Champions League.
The trophy comes only a few weeks after PSG’s success in Europe’s premier club competition. Having secured the Champions League, the Parisians have now followed it with victory over Aston Villa in the European Super Cup.
For Aston Villa, Madjo’s goal had cancelled out Kvaratskhelia’s opener and offered the prospect of another comeback. However, Doue’s second-half strike proved decisive, while PSG’s defence ensured that the late pressure did not produce a second equaliser.
The final score reflected a match in which PSG made the stronger start, saw their advantage removed immediately before half-time and then recovered their lead after the interval. Their ability to protect that advantage delivered a 2-1 victory and another trophy for the club.
