Chicago Fire defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi will travel to Finland for specialist surgery on a serious groin injury, a setback that has ended his MLS season and put a potential move to Europe on hold.
Mbokazi had attracted interest from clubs in Italy, but any transfer will now have to wait until he has recovered fully. The injury also rules him out of South Africa’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches, scheduled for September, October and November.
Basia Michaels of QT Sport confirmed to SABC Sport’s Mazola Molefe that the injury had halted all immediate plans for Mbokazi to leave Chicago Fire.
“Any transfer forMbokaziwould require him to successfully complete a medical, and the current situation makes that impossible because of the severity of his injury. Unfortunately, any plans to transfer the player will have to be put on hold,” said Michaels.
Michaels also confirmed that the defender would undergo his operation in Finland, where he will work with a specialist as part of the next stage of his treatment.
“We’ve been working over the past week to determine the best course of action for his recovery. He will now head toFinlandto work with a specialist and have the operation.
“There remains interest in his services, but at the moment that’s something we simply cannot explore because of the current setback,” she added.
European clubs continue to monitor Mbokazi despite the injury, but no move can be considered until he has returned to full fitness and is able to complete the required medical examination.
The absence of the Chicago Fire defender is also a significant blow to Bafana Bafana. He had been expected to form part of the squad for the team’s first 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures, but his recovery timetable means he will not be available during the three international windows.
His injury leaves South Africa’s incoming head coach without one of the country’s most promising young defenders at the start of the qualifying campaign. Mbokazi’s immediate priority will be surgery and rehabilitation, with any ambition of securing a move to Europe postponed until he is fit again.
The setback brings an abrupt end to his MLS season and delays a possible next step in his career. While interest in his services remains, the defender’s recovery must now take precedence over transfer discussions.
