Herve Renard has explained why he chose to return as head coach of Cote d’Ivoire rather than accept approaches from Senegal or Algeria, saying the Elephants offered both a high-quality squad and the right environment to pursue his ambitions.
Renard held his first news conference on Thursday since being appointed as Cote d’Ivoire’s new manager. The 57-year-old French coach has signed a contract that runs until 2028 and made no attempt to hide his delight at returning to the country where he won his second and last Africa Cup of Nations title in 2015.
His appointment marks a return to a familiar setting, but Renard said his decision was based on more than personal sentiment. He also pointed to the strength of the current squad and the conditions surrounding the national team as important factors in accepting the role.
“When Cote d’Ivoire contacts you…” was the central idea behind his explanation of the move. Renard said the opportunity to work with a talented group of players, in an environment he believes is conducive to success, made the Elephants particularly difficult to turn down.
Those two considerations ultimately outweighed interest from Senegal and Algeria. Renard’s choice was therefore shaped by a combination of sporting potential and personal ambition, as he seeks to return to the level of achievement he experienced with Cote d’Ivoire in 2015.
The Frenchman also spoke warmly about the national team, offering strong praise for the Elephants as he began his second spell in charge. His comments reflected both his attachment to the country and his belief that Cote d’Ivoire can provide him with the platform to compete for major honours again.
Renard’s previous tenure ended with a memorable triumph at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, where he guided Cote d’Ivoire to the title. That success remains his second and most recent continental championship, and it is a key part of the connection between the coach and the three-time African champions.
He arrives following a brief spell as Tunisia manager and now faces the task of leading Cote d’Ivoire under a long-term agreement lasting through 2028. At his introductory press conference, however, the emphasis was on the reasons that brought him back rather than on immediate targets.
Renard made clear that the decision had been carefully considered. Senegal and Algeria were alternatives, but Cote d’Ivoire stood apart because of the quality available to him and the supportive setting he felt would allow both his own objectives and those of the Elephants to be pursued together.
The return gives Renard the chance to reconnect with the team that delivered his greatest international success. For the coach, the appeal of Cote d’Ivoire was ultimately powerful enough to take precedence over the other opportunities on offer.
