Ryan Fosso Donfack has confirmed his decision to represent Cameroon at senior level, describing the move as a personal and emotional choice.
The 23-year-old midfielder, who plays for SK Sturm Graz, had previously featured for Switzerland at under-21 level but has now opted to switch his international allegiance to Cameroon, the country of his heritage.
Speaking in an interview with 237foot, Fosso Donfack explained the reasoning behind his decision, highlighting discussions with Cameroon’s coaching staff as a key factor.
“It’s a decision of the heart. The coach spoke to me; he’s an honest and trustworthy man.
“He shared his ideas with me, and the discussions were smooth and positive. The Lions are a great nation in international football and a very great African nation. I’ve been a supporter, and now it’s an honor to be able to become a player and give my all, because you represent all Cameroonians around the world.”
Fosso Donfack was born and raised in Switzerland, where he completed his education and developed his football career.
He came through the youth system at BSC Young Boys and later played for Fortuna Sittard before moving to Austria.
Despite his upbringing in Europe, the midfielder said he has long felt a strong connection to Cameroon.
He revealed that he followed the national team closely from a young age and drew inspiration from some of the country’s most iconic players.
“I’ve watched Cameroon matches since I was young.
“There were players who inspired me from a young age, like Alexandre Song and, of course, Samuel Eto’o. Cameroon is where my roots are. I wanted to join the national team at the U17 and U23 levels without success, but now we can say that this time, it’s finally happening.”
The midfielder’s decision comes at a promising moment in his club career.
He recently scored for Sturm Graz in a league match.
Fosso Donfack could now be in line to make his senior debut for Cameroon during the March international window, with fixtures scheduled against Australia and China.
He is expected to receive a call-up, which would mark the beginning of his international career with the Indomitable Lions.
His switch of allegiance reflects a broader trend of players with dual nationality choosing to represent their countries of origin at senior level, often driven by personal identity and opportunity.
For Cameroon, the addition of Fosso Donfack offers another midfield option as they continue to build for future competitions.
