Vinicius Junior’s future at Real Madrid could be decided this week after the Brazil forward returned to the club’s Valdebebas training centre on Monday for pre-season work and his first meeting with new manager Jose Mourinho.
According to the Catalan newspaper Sport, Vinicius is expected to meet Real Madrid’s board in the coming days to settle his position. He must decide whether to agree a new contract or leave during the current transfer window, with Arsenal closely monitoring the situation.
The dispute centres on the player’s belief that Real Madrid do not value him as one of the world’s leading footballers. His proposed salary would be significantly lower than that of France forward Kylian Mbappe, which Vinicius views as an insult to his status and contribution to the club.
Relations between the forward and Real Madrid have become increasingly strained over recent months. The tension has not been limited to the jeers Vinicius received at the Santiago Bernabeu after an inconsistent season. The prolonged negotiations over a new deal have also contributed to a breakdown in trust between the two sides.
Vinicius’ current contract runs until 30 June 2027. However, club president Florentino Perez has reportedly made it clear that the player must be sold for a substantial fee if he refuses to renew. Perez has previously shown he is willing to part with major stars, most notably Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Juventus in 2018 after helping Real Madrid win the UEFA Champions League.
The disagreement is understood to be financial. Vinicius believes Real Madrid’s offer of a four-year extension is inadequate, particularly when compared with Mbappe’s much higher salary.
One of the main points of contention concerns a loyalty bonus that Vinicius was due to receive when his existing contract expires in 2027. The player’s position is that signing a new agreement would automatically cancel the previous contract, meaning the bonus should be paid immediately. Real Madrid reject that interpretation and want to use the payment as part of negotiations over the renewal.
The other major issue is his annual wage. Sources close to the talks claim Real Madrid’s current proposal would leave Vinicius earning more than 10m euros a year less than Mbappe. The Brazilian considers that a diminishing of his importance, especially because he believes he has earned a strategic role within the club.
Real Madrid have told Vinicius that the offer is final, although there remains a small possibility of further talks.
If no agreement is reached, Arsenal are emerging as the most serious alternative. The London club has already contacted the player’s representatives to explore a move that could become one of the most significant transfers of the European summer.
Arsenal are prepared to risk offering the highest salary in Premier League history. The figure would be close to Mbappe’s current earnings at Real Madrid, in an attempt to persuade Vinicius to move to England.
For the transfer to be financially viable, however, Real Madrid would need to reduce their asking price. Perez is seeking 170m euros despite Vinicius having only one year remaining on his contract, while Arsenal want to sign him for less than 150m euros.
Negotiations remain possible and Arsenal are considered highly serious about the deal. Manager Mikel Arteta sees Vinicius as the missing piece in his squad.
Vinicius’ preference is still to stay at Real Madrid, a position he has made clear to people close to him, and the club understands that. He does not want to remain at any cost, though, and is seeking both the financial and personal recognition he feels he deserves.
Real Madrid must now decide whether to improve their offer at the last moment or risk losing one of their most important players of recent years.
Mourinho is strongly in favour of keeping Vinicius. The Portuguese manager is a major supporter of the forward and believes few players in the transfer market can change the course of a match in the way he can.
He hopes to help broker an agreement and is expected to attempt to calm the situation over the coming days, using his close relationship with the club’s leadership and his considerable influence within the dressing room.
