Olympique de Marseille have made an approach for Sael Kumbedi as they look to strengthen at right-back before the start of the new season.
The Ligue 1 club have sought information about the 21-year-old defender, who is currently under contract with Wolfsburg, according to Foot Mercato.
Kumbedi came through the academy at Le Havre AC before going on to play for Olympique Lyonnais. He moved to the Bundesliga in the summer of 2025, joining Wolfsburg after establishing himself as a promising young full-back in France.
Although Wolfsburg were relegated, Kumbedi enjoyed an impressive individual campaign. He provided five assists in 27 league appearances, while his defensive aggression and willingness to contribute in attack attracted interest from a number of clubs across Europe.
The defender has already made 89 professional appearances, despite his age, and is viewed by Marseille as a player capable of bringing greater energy and competition to the right side of their defence.
Marseille sporting director Gregory Lorenzi is understood to be particularly keen on the move. Lorenzi knew Kumbedi during the player’s time at Olympique Lyonnais and is reportedly strongly in favour of bringing him to the Canebiere.
However, reaching an agreement could prove difficult. Wolfsburg paid close to €9m to sign Kumbedi and are seeking an outright transfer rather than a temporary move. Marseille, by contrast, would prefer to recruit players on loan or target free agents as they continue to operate within their preferred financial framework.
The French club will also face competition for Kumbedi’s signature. Lazio, AS Roma, Porto and Feyenoord are all reported to be interested in the defender, creating a potentially competitive market for his services.
Kumbedi remains tied to Wolfsburg until 30 June 2029. His current market value is estimated at €12m by Transfermarkt, a figure that could further complicate Marseille’s efforts to negotiate a deal.
The player’s combination of defensive intensity, attacking output and experience at senior level has made him an attractive option for clubs looking to strengthen at right-back. For Marseille, any move would depend on whether Wolfsburg are prepared to consider a structure other than a permanent transfer and whether the French side can fend off interest from their European rivals.
Kumbedi’s next move will therefore be closely watched as Marseille continue their search for defensive reinforcements ahead of the new campaign.
